Kitimat Fishing Report

Attached are pics of father/son twosome with an assortment of fly caught Chum Salmon all in the upper 20 lb range. When Jerry first made his request to join us in Skeena country, he wanted a trip that he could remember all his life as his son was going to attend his first year at U of C in Santa Cruz, CA, USA. His goal was to have a great trip as well a gift from a proud father. He also mentioned that they were beginner flycasters. I prefer beginners as they listen and learn, as this was a new gig for them. The boys quickly found out that a well-placed cast results in a hook-up, at times of colossal sizes. With a few general rules for flycasting these guys were off to the races and well versed by the first day. With that came some snapped lines, a broken knot resulting in a lost fly line, all sorts that happen to all clients each season when targeting the Chum Salmon lurking the BC waters.

We ventured to the lower Skeena targeting fresh Steelhead, as well the Skeena drainage is breathtaking, as waterfalls drop from the mountain crevasse some 7000ft above. Taylor was casting into a small slick and I watched intently as his fly swung around, it stopped? Taylor pulled and the line did not move, its snagged he says. Walk down to it and pull again, it may come free. Taylor walks a few steps and pulls real hard on his home crafted 8wt his dad made for him. The line starts to move and large Steelhead busts the waters surface, runs at Taylor, slack lines him and is gone. The pull I wanted to see all day happened, and when it happened we were both open-mouthed. I could only hope this Steelhead made it to the camera shot, as it was a beauty enroute to the Upper Skeena reaches, very aggressive to say the least. Taylor mentioned to me later in the trip how much he has learned from this trip and it was a pat on the back to say the least. My next report includes our last week for the Kings and each one of the foursome landed and released a 42”x35” Chinook, all Tyee Salmon.

Our guests arriving these weeks are the Erving/Adams group and the Wade group.
