Skeena/Kitimat Fishing Report
When it comes to flyfishing the Kitimat this time of year anglers are rewarded with Chum Salmon that take swung flies with an aggressive pull. Attached is England angler Alistair with a large Chum, as well a pic I took of the fish in mid air. These Salmon do not give up and a fly angler can expect a sore arm if they intend to bring one of these dogs to the net. Also attached is him mother Jackie, an excellent fly caster who landed this respectable fish on my “Kitimat Popsicle Special”. That day Jackie hooked a Chum so big it took all the fly line to the backing knot before we had to break it off, some 250yds! The large fish burst out of the water like a cannonball hitting a backyard pool, Spaloosh! With many exciting days on the water we had a ball as the family affair enjoyed many moments. From lovely wife liz and baby on the sand bar of the Skeena, to the father of the bunch Jiles, who hooked many Salmon on the fly and had a Chum pull him into the river. When I noticed Jiles he was barely above water, I was about to net a fish of Alistair’s, then all hell broke loose. A cry from Jackie made it all clear that she was concerned. When I waded to Jiles, he had his fly rod in hand, tip up, and a smile from ear to ear. I had to say no more, he was in heaven. For that angler that is yearning to hook a fish each cast and turning it into a reality, Northern BC has what it takes. The Skeena has really turned it on lately as the Chinooks are in the mainstem pushing up river as well the species following, like the Sockeye and Pink Salmon. Our clients from Spain enjoyed a mid week trip of Chinook on the fly and Cesar landed two 28lbers in a day as well another in the second day.
With August come the drop in river level and well the clarity, making for our finest season of Steelhead on the fly. Get ready for the Steelhead Season as Skeena puts on an autumn treat for the anglers entering Heaven.
