Skeena Steelhead Report

The last week of the Steelhead season has been prime, as not only the numbers of fish were exceptional, the river conditions were, and still are, clear and low.

Our last clients of the season were three-peat guests and again we had some very nice Steelhead to the net. Last Season we sight fished for Steelhead and this year we did it again. Having a Steelhead move towards a swinging, sub-surface fly proved to work very well. This also gave me great insight into a Steelheads behavior in the wild. A steelhead has a small window of sight and we often wonder why they do not take a fly. We found that the fly had to be within 16 inches of the Steelhead to provoke a take, and can at times have to be repeated numerously. Also we found that a change in fly size is crucial as well the proper combination of color and flash. Another key for sure is the sink tip. I have been using the Rio line of products for a couple of years now and without a doubt they are ahead by leaps and bounds on the competition. These lines are easy to use and can take a real beating without failure.

Attached in two of the pics are our two Americans Ed and Thurm with a couple of 36 inchers. Honorable mention has to go to Brenda as the last day on the river she landed another 20lber plus as well her husband Brian with a 20lber. Brenda landed three fish over 20lbs in three days and has booked for next year, imagine that, eh.

With the Saltwater fishing for Chinooks about to begin the season is predicted to be an excellent run from the BC government analysis.

See you on the water.
