Steelhead report: Skeena region

With the rain pounding down and the rivers rising the season has come to a trickle as clients await the March Steelhead fishery on the BC North coast. Our line-up of Steelhead guests for the October weeks were rewarded with some big fish, not to mention the hard pull of Steelhead eluding the avid fly anglers. From snapped fly lines to breaking of 15lb tippet we saw it all this year.

Mr. Yamada spent time with us and attached is a chrome hen he took on one of his wide assortment of flies. In fact the Steelhead were surfacing as we fished this pool and a dry fly response was attainable as water temps were 45F. Taking two Steelhead in the same run made for some great excitement as this first timer was impressed with the aggressive takes our BC Steelhead produce. In fact one of the Steelhead hooked made an unbelievable run and I watched as this all happened, not only snapping the tippet but also breaking the skin on the knuckle as the reel handle screamed line. Yamada said it perfect as he reeled in his limp lifeless line, “this is Steelhead fishing!”, see you next year.

Our American fellas also had joy as Alex hooked three Steelhead in a day, landing the pair and attached is an 18lber he brought to the net for a photo op. Fishing a small seam he was rewarded with a nice Buck Steelhead, way to go Alex. His partners were also into tight lines and what impressed me allot was the books that are written on scent and the Steelhead fly angler. I watched as Mr. Freeman made his entrance into the Steelhead lie, first bending down as if to say a prayer, but as I watched he dug his fingers into the rocks and mud and washed his fly with the local scent of the river. “Why are you doing this, I asked.” Free replied, “I read it somewhere”. I often wonder myself as well as others as we put on bug spray, eat all kinds of food that touches our fingers and applies itself to our flies, does this turn Steelhead off of a take, I would think so. Having two marabou feathers tied onto a hook and swung into Steelhead is hard enough to do; I think the human scent must play a part in all of this. Thanx to Mr. Freeman it all but concludes the mystery on this item of discussion….

Also attached are assortment of Steelhead photos taken by our clients and guides this fall and we look forward to having you back next year.

With our bookings for the spring Steelhead fishery filling up, please contact us ASAP, as late bookings will not be filled, cheers.
