October
1, 2001
This Coho season again has been a success. I guided people
from across Canada and around the world. My Japanese clients
from the lower mainland and native Japan had a beautiful time
with many tight lines. We landed and released numbers in the
twenties on the Kitimat, which is my home river. We used a
variety of techniques for the silvers, which included the
copper Coho spoon, the purple jig, and the blue fox. The roe
fishing was again successful. The conditions changed every
half week, as heavy rains brought high and dirty waters. The
system recovers quickly and brings with it large trees, making
for changes in water direction and some tricky drift boat
manoeuvring.
It
is now October and the Kitimat river has spent all its generous
amounts of the Salmon and steelhead. The creeks and small
streams are spawning, making for years of great angling into
the future. The hatchery is still receiving a small run of
Coho and extreme anglers are still playing.
The Skeena system on the other hand is smokin. The Coho are
in thick and the size of these fellas are impressive, some
in the mid twenties. I fished the mainstream Skeena last week
and the Steelies were active, making the 6500 ambassadors
scream. I have had to replace all the pall and worm gear on
all my reels as this has been a banner season.
The
Lakelse River has been hot with large numbers of Coho and
allot of angling pressure. This small system has limited waters
to fish so get out there early if you want to beat the crowds.
The fall also makes for the season of steelhead fishing.
Numerous rivers are available to the active angler and I will
be out in full force. We are going on the Bulkley the weekend
of the 13th and the excitement is mounting. Large Skeena steelhead
are in the system now .
The September long weekend is host to the Kitimat River fish
derby with a purse of $500.00 for the largest fish dressed
and this years winner was yours truly.
I have other reports on my site from this years angling,
so enjoy and tight lines!!
