Skeena Steelhead

With the Skeena playing difficult these days some of the clientele as well the guides are taking the odd Steelhead on the fly. Depending on the pool of the day rewards can be offered with some aggressive pulls. Here is a pic of Mr. Hirakawa who entered Skeena country when conditions were less than favorable. I mentioned that the Kitimat was fishing clean and fish were active. His only words were, “Steelhead is number 1”, that was all he had to say, not to mention lost luggage for the first 2 days did not help. Having drawn a blank the first 2 days but watching as Steelhead rolled in the untouchable middle section of the Skeena kept the hopes up, as well watching many Black Bears crossing the raging river. Finally the sky’s parted and the gods shone upon him having 3 Steelhead in a day not to mention chasing another down the rip of the Skeena only to elude him at the safest gravel bar meters down the river.

With that in mind pictured is our happy angler with a fresh Steelhead as well his guide Ted with a respectable Skeena Steelhead.

With many options available these days we have fished the Saltwater in Kitimat for Coho as well the river itself is turning on. Not to mention our coastal rivers are really pushing in fresh fish on each tide. Attached are repeat clients from England, Harry and John the Jiggin machines with 30 inch Coho and 19 inch girths, powerful fish to say the least. As well Francesco with a coastal bar of Silver, landing 3 fish in as many casts, and his son Mateo with a Coho. Mateo also landed a nice Steelhead on the Skeena and also witnessed as a 40lb Steelhead was landed, pic to follow, hopefully, as it was not my camera. Partnered was friend Daniel who has spent many days in Skeena country staying true to the flyrod, he landed many fresh Coho on the fly. And also asked me to fillet a fresh Coho and eat it raw! Actually it was quite nice and had a solid texture, tight lines guys.

With mid September at our doorstep and the trees turning, the Coho are still running as well our fall Steelhead fishery will begin shortly. Week guests are the Hassett threesome, Todd and friend and the Alexander group.
